Apple iPhone 11 Pro Max review: The iPhone for all seasons

In his iconic book “A Tale of Two Cities” Charles Dickens wrote, “It was the season of light, it was the season of darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair.” Now to even mention Apple in the same breath as anything Dickensian is quite blasphemous, but somehow 2018 – as far iPhones were concerned – could be somewhat summed up by the above Dickens quote.

When Apple launched the iPhone XS and XS Max, they were these excellent phones with almost everything going for them, except the price. In a sense, it was the season of light. However, soon the season of darkness began – we know it’s a hyperbole but it did seem like that at one point. Almost every analyst worth their salt had predicted doom and gloom for the iPhones. Then came the spring of hope when suddenly things looked up for the iPhone and the XR ended up being the most popular smartphone of the year. Now, if you are wondering what happened to the winter of despair? Well, that’s something Apple would want – and fervently hope – to avoid with its new crème de la crème iPhone 11 Pro series.

We all knew that the 2019 iPhones won’t be taking a quantum leap of faith. 5G wasn’t expected, the displays were expected to be the same and this wasn’t going to be an avant-garde of an iPhone. Despite putting a hefty starting price tag of Rs 1,09,900, Apple hasn’t really added the bells and whistles. Yet, there’s a certain je ne sais quois about the new iPhone 11 Pro Max. Whether it actually translates into compelling people to spend over Rs 1 lakh or not is something we attempt to decode in our review. Read on to find out more.

iPhone 11 Pro Max review: What’s new in looks and design

Apple for a while has stopped ripping apart the design book and starting afresh. What it does now is make iterations that aren’t noticeable but come with their own share of novelty factors. For instance, the iPhone 11 Pro Max is a shade thicker than the iPhone XS Max. However, at a single glance that’s hard to notice. What’s new with the iPhone 11 Pro Max’s design is the matte finish that Apple has incorporated in its Pro range of iPhones. The Midnight Green – we are predicting it to be the most popular colour of the year – is a very Apple-esque green. In other words, you won’t find a green like this in any other smartphone. Remember how Apple took a shade of Pink with the iPhone 6S, called it Rose Gold and suddenly it was the colour to have. We expect the same to happen with the Midnight Green as well. All the other three colour variants — Space Grey, Silver and Gold — have a matte finish that give them a different look than the last year’s XS iPhones.

Apple started the trend – well sort of – with iPhone X with having an all-glass back. Now, we have seen over the last couple of years that a glass back is a fingerprint magnet. Even the iPhone XS Max was prone to smudges and fingerprints. The iPhone 11 Pro Max is the exact opposite with its matte finish. You’ll have to strain your eyes to find fingerprints or any sort of smudges on the back of it.

Apple claims that it has used the “most durable glass in a smartphone.” While we weren’t brave or adventurous enough to put that to test by dropping it around, it does feel a bit solid than the iPhone XS Max. Though we have been using the iPhone 11 Pro Max without a screen guard and it has picked a scratch or two on the front by sliding in and out of our pockets.
